Community gets involved with drive to help people get online

Thenue Housing is to play its part in “Get Online Week” this month.

The initiative takes place from 13-19 October with the aim of inspiring people across the UK to get online and pick up digital skills.

Thenue is offering people of all ages the opportunity to drop into one of its offices and learn more about the advantages of getting online.
Computers and the internet make everyone’s life quicker, easier and better and there is now so much more that can be done online from shopping to gaining knowledge

These drop in sessions will take place at
97 MAIN STREET, BRIDGETON

Monday to Thursday 13 - 16th October
10.30 am to 3.30 pm

Friday 17 October
2 pm to 3.30 pm.

Friendly and FREE advice about getting online will be available and will be particularly useful for those starting from scratch.

Thenue places great emphasis on helping those living in the local community to pick up these skills thanks to its ongoing “Smart Communities” digital inclusion project funded by the Scottish Government.

Dawn McManus, Thenue’s Digital Inclusion Community Worker, said: “We are doing lots to help including the drop in sessions during Get Online Week, computer classes and we will be seeking to create ‘’Digital Champions’ in our communities who can help others learn these skills. We are proud to be playing our part in Get Online Week.”

“If you’ve got a spare hour, we’re on hand during Get Online Week to show you how it could save you time, hassle and even money. Whether you want to get healthy, get connected, get a job or get a bargain, you could be doing it all - and more - by doing it online.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never even touched a computer before or if you already know a bit - this is your chance to give computers and the internet a go. It’s fun, it’s free, and it could change how you do your favourite things - and your everyday chores - forever! Come along to 97 Main Street and see what you could do with technology, and what technology could do for you.”

One person who’s already got online with a bit of help from Thenue Housing is senior citizen and eastender Margaret Woods.“Silver surfer” Margaret is proving that age is no barrier to picking up computer skills.

Margaret, a resident of Calton, attends classes on getting online and is now increasing her IT skills, chatting to her son overseas regularly over the internet, retracing some of Glasgow’s fascinating history and “loving” the regular classes she attends.

Margaret said: “I am learning all the time and it is making life so much easier. Being able to speak to my son over Skype is wonderful. I wish I had learned this years ago!”
